Colours of Africa: Redearth Education’s Charity Fundraiser Illuminates Hope for Uganda

Written on: 6 January 2025

A VIBRANT EVENING FOR A NOBLE CAUSE

On a remarkable evening at Stationers’ Hall in London, Redearth Education hosted its much-anticipated charity art fundraiser, “Colours of Africa 2024.” In partnership with Mott MacDonald, this event aimed to raise crucial funds to support education in rural Uganda. The fundraiser showcased a dazzling array of art created by Ugandan children, capturing the vibrancy, hope, and vision of their homeland.

Guests were not only treated to the visual spectacle of these paintings but also entertained by ACT, a Ugandan cultural group based in London. The evening was further enriched by heartfelt speeches from Lynne and Ronnie, two of the founders of Redearth Education.

THE MISSION BEHIND THE ART

The fundraiser wasn’t just about art; it was about empowering Uganda’s future. Despite many Ugandan children dreaming of becoming accountants, artists, teachers, and engineers, only 20% complete primary school. Funds raised from this event will be directed towards improving the quality of education through teacher training, enhanced resources, and sustainable school programs.

Redearth Education Uganda’s efforts have already made a significant impact. As the local implementing partner, they focus on creating programs that foster positive pupil outcomes, sustainability, collaboration, and strong local governance.

THE STORY OF REDEARTH EDUCATION

Lynne, Ronnie and Di, all with extensive careers in education, first travelled to Uganda in 2003 as volunteers. The name “Redearth” was inspired by Uganda’s vibrant soil, which symbolised the potential for growth in the children they met. They registered Redearth Education as a charity in 2006, focusing on teacher development to improve educational outcomes for children in rural areas.

Their journey has been a testament to dedication and adaptability. They worked tirelessly to build local capacity, construct training centres, and develop a model nursery school. In 2012, Lynne and Ronnie retired from their jobs in the UK and spent a decade living in Uganda, ensuring the sustainability of their initiatives whilst Di and other volunteers, including other board memebrs, continued to visit and provide training and support.

BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Today, Redearth Education operates as a locally-led organisation in Uganda, with Redearth Education UK founders and board members providing ongoing support remotely. This approach ensures that the community takes ownership of the programs, creating lasting change.

During the event, Lynne shared how their journey taught them the importance of understanding and respecting the cultural and social context of Uganda. They initially arrived with preconceived notions but quickly adapted to the unique challenges and opportunities of the Ugandan education system.

A SHARED VISION WITH MOTT MACDONALD

The partnership with Mott MacDonald, a global engineering and consultancy firm, has been pivotal. Employees like Millie, who previously volunteered with Redearth Education in Uganda, spearheaded the collaboration. The company funded the event, including the venue, marketing, and logistics, allowing all proceeds from the art donations to go directly to Redearth Education.

Millie shared her inspiring journey, from volunteering with Red Earth as a teenager to coordinating this event through Mott MacDonald. Her passion, along with the dedication of a 20-strong volunteer team, made the event a resounding success.

A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR UGANDAN CHILDREN

The event concluded with Alderman Vincent Keaveny, former Lord Mayor of London, emphasising the significance of philanthropy and the transformative power of partnerships like this one. His words underscored the importance of supporting initiatives like Redearth Education, which not only address immediate educational challenges but also lay the foundation for a brighter, more equitable future.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees, including one individual who donated £150 for a painting with a starting donation request of £5, the fundraiser exceeded expectations. This heartwarming display of support reinforces the belief that, together, we can make a difference.
